IPSANZ and NZ Bar Association jointly present:
Discussion Panel and Workshop
Litigation Practice - Where to now?
On Friday 30 July 2010 IPSANZ and the New Zealand
Bar Association are pleased to present a joint panel discussion and workshop
looking at the often contentious issue of how best to manage and run civil
litigation in the High Court.
This will be a continuation of the New Zealand Bar Association’s
"Litigation in Crisis – What Crisis?” seminar and pick up on the
same themes.
The session will be chaired and moderated by Justice Annabelle Bennett of the Federal Court of Australia and a panel of eminent judges and litigators including Justice Fogarty (Chair of the Rules Committee); Jim Farmer QC and Julian Miles QC.
The panel’s discussion will cover a range of topics that focus on the often difficult issues of:
|
Case management and active judicial involvement |
Fast track procedures |
|
Managing relatively simple and complex cases |
Early narrowing of issues and properly focused pleadings |
|
Oral versus written evidence and advocacy |
Discovery |
|
Specialisation |
Duty to cooperate |
The purpose of the workshop will be to contrast and compare best practices in Australia and New Zealand and explore some of the perennial procedural problems that judges and parties’ solicitors and counsel face and come up with practical and workable solutions.
